PFD Post-Series: Interview Reflection

Introduction

It is the final week of my professional development reflections as I finish my final blog entry. I have recently attended an interview with Mazzor Studios as their Junior Unity Developer. In this blog entry, I will talk about the interview experience, feedback that I received, and how I plan to use those lessons for my future professional development.

Interview Experience

The interview itself was very good. I was able to answer most questions with confidence, drawing from
my hands-on experience with Unity and C#, as well as from completing the pre-interview task such as
the Unity Car Customisation Project. I enjoyed describing my process, problem-solving,
documentation, and iterative development to the interviewer.

I had never had an interview before so with little use of what I can do and what to expect I researched
the company thoroughly and also had a read of some advice on how to perform well in an interview.
I believe that this and my own interest in the role helped me do as well as I did in the interview.

Feedback Reflection

I was given some beneficial comments from the interviewer:

  • They praised my ability to integrate my technical knowledge and practical experience into my answers.

  • My pre-interview task was highlighted as being extremely well executed, and my documentation and problem-solving skills came out positively.

  • The only slight criticism was that I make sure that I include more of my educational background in answers, and relate classroom learning to my actual applications.

I really appreciated this feedback. It made me realise that my attempt at technical projects and documentation pays off, and also pointed to a small but important area of further development.
To improve from the critical comments, I will make adjustments with active consideration provided to comments to discuss so that I can be sure the interviewer is being provided with all the information and background needed.

Integrating Educational Aspects

Keeping in mind the feedback, I understand that incorporating more information regarding my educational history would strengthen my responses. In subsequent interviews and discussions, I plan to:

  • Refer to particular course work or projects that further highlighted my familiarity with Unity and C#.

  • Highlight how conceptual ideas from my courses have influenced my hands-on problem-solving skills.

  • Emphasise the role of academic learning in developing a systematic, analytical approach that goes hand-in-hand with hands-on work.

Conclusion

Overall, the interview was an incredibly worthwhile learning opportunity. I'm pleased that my hands-on capabilities and quality documentation were valued, and I'm motivated to continue refining my process by applying even more of my academic understanding. This last blog not only summarises my interview process but also seals my commitment to continuous improvement as I approach the launch of my career in game development.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to apply these lessons and keep building on both my technical expertise and professional presentation.
